Lee Flanagan for Addiscombe East
I've lived in Croydon since 2005 with my wife Suzie and our two sons, first in Selsdon and, for the past 12 years, here in Addiscombe. Croydon is my home. I love its open spaces, its vibrant communities, and the mix of people who make this such a special borough.
Professionally, I've spent the last twenty years teaching Physics at Trinity School, where I am Head of Science. I've had the privilege of helping hundreds of young people from all backgrounds to thrive and reach their potential. As a union representative, I successfully campaigned for the first union recognition agreement with the Whitgift Foundation in 2019-proof that constructive dialogue can deliver lasting change.
I come from a working-class background. My dad started out as a private in the Army, my mum worked on the Youth Training Scheme, and I studied at a state school before earning a place at Cambridge. My mum's experience with bipolar disorder also gave me a deep understanding of mental health challenges and the importance of compassionate, community-based support. Away from work, I'm a keen runner with Striders and a regular Parkrunner, enjoying Croydon's wonderful green spaces. I'm also an enthusiastic DIYer and avid reader.
I am standing for election because Addiscombe East deserves better. For too long, local politics here has been a tired two-party tug of war between Labour and the Conservatives. Residents tell me they feel poorly served by both sides-whether it's the failure to regenerate our town centre, the rise in shoplifting and antisocial behaviour, or the continuing financial chaos at Croydon Council. Neither of the two main parties have learned the lessons, and residents are paying the price.
I believe in listening, collaborating, and getting things done-not in point-scoring or defending past mistakes. I'm not a career politician. Until recently, I wasn't even a member of a political party. But when something's broken, I believe you should stand up and fix it.
That's why I'm standing as your Liberal Democrat candidate. Because Croydon deserves better, and Addiscombe East deserves a councillor who will put residents first. With your support, I'll be that change.
